Gainesville Reads at the Northeast Georgia History Center

Overview
As part of the Northeast Georgia History Center's mission to serve the community as an educational resource, the History Center offers a free, one-on-one tutoring and mentorship program for 1st-5th grade students in Hall County and the surrounding area who struggle with reading. We are currently accepting new students for our Fall 2021-Spring 2022 session.

Tutoring One-on-one tutoring consists of a one hour session in four parts: Reading, Lexia, Workbook, and Play. All elements of the program are tailored to meet the specific needs of each student. Tutors and students meet once per week at the History Center. All of our volunteer tutors have undergone a background check and interview process, and have received tutor training.

Adventure Game Option At the end of each tutoring session, students are invited to play our group "Adventure Game" for an additional 30 minutes. This game encourages creative thinking, collaboration, confidence in speaking abilities, and teaches the elements of story.

Virtual Sessions Students who are unable to attend on-site tutoring or students who are on the waiting list for a tutor may attend our weekly virtual lessons via Zoom. During each virtual session, students are led by a trained Virtual Tutor in reading stories together and playing the Adventure Game.

Schedule Tutoring sessions are held Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 4:30-5:30 PM with the option to join our group Adventure Game from 5:30-6:00 PM. The first sessions will take place on August 11-13th, 2021. The last session of the academic year will end May 25-27th 2022. We follow the Hall County and Gainesville City School calendar for holiday breaks. At the end of the year, students are evaluated to see if they need to continue the program or graduate from the program.

MASK POLICY UPDATE
Out of an abundance of caution, we are implementing a mask requirement during the tutoring hour for both tutors and students. Our mask policy will change according to CDC and local health professional guidelines.

Requirements for Gainesville Reads

• The student must be in grades 1st-5th and reside in the Hall County or surrounding area.
• The student must have a need for tutoring. This is demonstrated by providing the student's most recent report card with a grade lower than B in Reading/Language or Arts/English. Other documentation such as homeschool reports may be provided.
• If participating in on-site tutoring, the student must have reliable transportation to and from the History Center. The History Center is located at 322 Academy Street NE Gainesville, GA 30501.
• If participating in Virtual Tutoring, the student must have internet access and a laptop or computer at home with a webcam.
• The student must regularly attend tutoring. Students will be allowed 3 Excused Absences and 2 Unexcused Absences. Students may be removed from the program if they go beyond the allowed absences.
